Farm Sanctuary is excited to be celebrating our 35th Anniversary this year. It is a milestone that not only signals our own beginning but also the founding of a movement to rescue, provide refuge, and advocate for farm animals while educating people on how they can help. Since 1986, the number of people who have chosen or are moving towards a compassionate vegan lifestyle has grown exponentially, as has the number of farm animal sanctuaries across the country and around the world.

We are in the midst of a cultural shift toward plant-based living—moving us closer to achieving our vision of a world where Sanctuary replaces exploitation.

While our anniversary provides us with the chance to reflect upon the legislative and legal victories, the thousands of animals rescued, and the millions of people changed forever by their stories over the past 35 years, we are more importantly embracing 2021 as an opportunity to forge the foundation upon which the farm animal welfare movement will thrive for the next 35 years—and beyond.

Together with your partnership, we know that this vision can and will become reality. Simply put, no anniversary celebration would be complete without you. Because of your tireless dedication to farm animals as one of our most loyal friends, Farm Sanctuary invites you to be an integral and impactful part of our 35th Anniversary year initiatives.

35th ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGN INVESTMENT AREAS

Vertical explainer photo 1 - Caregiver giving a snack to a pig at Farm Sanctuary.

This support will significantly expand Farm Sanctuary’s capacity to rescue and place farm animals and will build upon our animal care expertise—thereby increasing our impact. Areas of investment will include bolstering our staff recruiting and retention efforts, investing in our Shelter team’s safety and wellbeing, and evolving and standardizing animal care protocols.

We will add four new caregiver positions across our two Sanctuary locations to elevate our capacity and the individualized attention afforded to each of our animal residents. We will add a staff veterinarian to effectively lead our internal practice of high-quality, proactive medical care while advancing organizational expertise in the field of farm animal medicine. Finally, we have just hired a Sanctuary-based research manager, who will work closely with our Shelter team to implement animal welfare programs designed to enrich the lives of our residents.

We will undertake priority projects to improve the lives, ensure the security, and promote the wellbeing of our farm animal residents. These will include additions and enhancements to our shelters, such as a new pavilion in Watkins Glen to protect our cattle from extreme weather, and the installment of a chute system in Acton to keep our West Coast herd safe during health checks and transports. Capital projects will also include vital technology upgrades that will support our operational infrastructure and further the growth of our dynamic programs.

Our increased advocacy initiatives will focus on state and federal policy, strategic litigation, and legislative advocacy efforts aimed at advancing the welfare of billions of factory-farmed animals at the systemic level. Investments include the addition of a Future Food Systems Program Manager and Policy Specialist to lead our efforts to shift agriculture to a just and sustainable food system.

Through our humane education class opportunities and curriculum resources for teachers and students, we are expanding our programmatic reach across the nation. We will introduce new educational opportunities for adult audiences through our Community Learning Program—aimed at developing critical thinking skill sets and action around social change. We will also partner with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and its Alliance for Fair Food in the development and implementation of joint curricula to engage college-level students in our work.

We will continue to focus on growing and diversifying our audiences across all of our social media platforms and engaging more people through our website and events. The expansion of our virtual and membership engagement events and new Sanctuary Speaker Series enable us to reach the thought leaders and change-makers who move our mission forward—enabling our global community of friends and supporters to experience the Power of Sanctuary from afar.

If you’ve ever felt inspired by the Power of Sanctuary, you’re not alone.
In 2020, Farm Sanctuary engaged 1,053,500,000+ people globally through our public awareness and media campaigns.
