Nestled in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York, the rolling green pastures of Farm Sanctuary’s 275-acre New York Sanctuary are home to more than 600 rescued farm animals.
Our 26-acre Southern California Sanctuary — home to approximately 100 rescued farm animals — is located on a beautiful hacienda ranch in Acton, just 45 minutes from Hollywood.
In collaboration with the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, Farm Sanctuary’s research team aims to take you on a journey into the inner lives of sheep. Do sheep recognize each other? What sorts of emotions do they feel? Are they moody? Do they have individual personalities?
Join us on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 for a liveZoom webinar for those who love sheep, want to learn more about sheep sentience and intelligence, and are interested in using science to inform animal advocacy.
We will:
Highlight the latest research on sheep sentience
Interview sheep cognition scientist Dr. Camille Raoult about her experience working with sheep to learn about their moods
Take you into the sheep barn with one of Farm Sanctuary’s caregivers to hear stories that illustrate sheep sentience on the farm (and maybe meet some of our residents!)
Have an opportunity to join a live Q&A with a Farm Sanctuary caregiver, Farm Sanctuary’s director of research, sheep researcher Dr.Camille Raoult, and Dr. Lori Marino of the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy.
Sheep are intriguing individuals with their own needs, preferences, and personalities. We invite you to get to know them better.
Features
How we interpret ambiguous stimuli or situations depends upon whether we are depressed or anxious or feeling on top of the world. Sheep experience this too.
From “Thinking Sheep: A Review of Cognition, Emotion, & Social Complexity in Domestic Sheep” by Dr. Marino & Dr. Merskin
Co-Hosted by:
Lauri Torgerson-White, Farm Sanctuary’s Director of Research
Dr. Lori Marino, Founder and Executive Director of The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy
Interviews with:
Dr. Camille Raoult, animal welfare and cognition researcher
Daniel Singleton, Farm Sanctuary’s Animal Care Manager
Lauri Torgerson-White is an animal welfare scientist and research director at Farm Sanctuary, where she works with the sanctuary residents, designing and implementing research to understand more about the inner lives of farmed animals. Lauri also helps to manage Farm Sanctuary’s future food system program. Before coming to Farm Sanctuary, Lauri was director of research and lead animal welfare specialist at Mercy For Animals. She holds a master of science in zoology from Michigan State University, where she studied animal personality. Prior to her work with Mercy For Animals, she worked to improve the lives of captive animals as the first research analyst in the Center for Zoo Animal Welfare at the Detroit Zoo. She has authored peer-reviewed publications on animal welfare, personality, and cognition; taught university-level biology and nutrition courses; and traveled all over the world visiting farms to better understand the needs of farmed animals.

Dr. Camille Raoult
Animal welfare and cognition researcher
Dr. Camille Raoult is an animal welfare and cognition scientist whose work has focused on how animals perceive their environments and how they feel. Dr. Raoult grew up in the French countryside observing the animals in her community, which led her to pursue a PhD in animal welfare and cognition. During her PhD, she worked with sheep to understand more about their moods. She has since expanded her interests and is working to learn more about cognition and emotion in pigs as a way to improve their welfare.
